Oral Cancer – Silent Killer Afforded No Attention?

oral cancer screening

No single day passes without the mainstream media highlighting a cancer-related victim succumbing to the lethal fangs of this malignant disease. But while savvy people are getting routine cancer screening regarding advanced by specialized physicians and the attention focused on Prostate, Lung, Breast, Brain, and other types, none seemingly bothers about Oral Cancer. The scourge advances undetected and eventually undiagnosed, killing many people, albeit silently.

What’s Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer, also called mouth cancer, is a case where a tumor develops in the mouth’s lining and gradually gets out of hand. It may grow on the surface of the tongue, on the lips, inside the cheeks, on the roof of the mouth, where tonsils develop or even in the salivary glands. Essentially, it is an uncontrolled growth of cells whose primary intent is to damage the surrounding tissue.

What Triggers Mouth Cancer?

Well, pretty much like lung cancer, oral cancer is caused by smoking and using any of the common forms of tobacco. Again, it tends to occur mostly among those who drink heavily as well as an infection from Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which also causes genital warts. But it is also caused by genetic mutations and hereditary or family lineages.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology estimates that 48,330 Americans were to receive a diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer in 2016 and a further 9,570 persons were to die from it. Most of those diagnosed with it are 40-year-olds, with men being a lot more susceptible to it than women (twice as high). Of course, these figures merely highlight why this disease is more of a silent killer.

What are the symptoms of Oral Cancer?

  • Swellings, lumps or bumps, rough spots and eroded areas on the typical spots where it could have attacked.
  • Velvety-white, red, or white and red patches in the mouth.
  • Unexpected and unexplained bleeding in the mouth.
  • Numbness and loss of sensitivity, painful tenderness in the mouth, face or neck areas.
  • Rough, stubborn sores on the neck, face or mouth – they bleed easily and don’t heal within two weeks.
  • A sore feeling that something is trapped in the back of the throat.
  • Pain chewing and swallowing, speaking or moving the tongue and jaw.
  • A sore throat and subsequent change in voice.
