Relationship between TMJ disorder and ADHD

Among the many different side effects of TMJ disorder is ADHD.

Though it may sound surprising and unbelievable, this article explains this relationship coherently and in detail.

Of course, not every ADHD is related to jaw disorder, but it is worthwhile to check for such relationship before you embark on taking the medication.

What happens during TMJ disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD is a condition that occurs when the jaw joint is out of the proper position. You may feel a popping or clicking noise, have frequently broken crowns or bone loss due to grinding, experience pain or discomfort in the jaw or even severe headaches. You can read more on the TMJ symptoms in our other article.

Mostly, you won’t notice the presence of this disorder when the joint is dislocated, though it does create lots of tension in the muscles area and around the airways. The airways may become smaller leading to the little amount of oxygen going through, and consequently resulting in oxygen insufficiency.

TMJ and ADHD: how does TMJ disorder relate to hyperactivity and inability to concentrate?

According to an experiment done in a group of healthy adults basically by giving them a few small straws and then asked to breathe through for 10 minutes, many were not able to sit still for a few moments. They wanted to get up and walk around as their psychic was distracted and they demonstrated all signs of having ADHD.

When the experiment was over, and people were allowed to breathe normally, their behavior came back to normal. The same happens after treating TMJ disorder as the airways are opened to the proper size to allow oxygen to access the blocked areas. It also serves as the best treatment for ADHD behavior.
